oh, january

I know I'm not the only one who feels this way.

January...it's such a drab month.

I looked out my kitchen window this afternoon and saw rain dripping from the pergola.

"Oh, January," I said with a sigh.

Then I noticed the cute red and white checked ribbons tying back my kitchen curtains.

I hardly notice these during the summer months, because we spend so much time outside.

And as I look around the house, I notice other things about January that aren't so bad...

piles of books all over the house

and brand new calendars!

Now I'm on the lookout...

what else do I over look as I glance out my window and see a dreary, gray sky?

I found myself doing the same thing today in the wet and gray PNW weather. Your post inspired me, thanks.

Thanks so much for your sweet, encouraging comment left on my blog today. I needed that. Anyway.

Your making me think here, too. Yesterday we had a really drab, grey day (which doesn't usually bother me)but I honestly hadn't really noticed how drab the day was until my son (2 1/2 years old) just started to laugh and laugh -over lunch- to which he comments, while looking out the window..."the sun, the sun"... I finally noticed how drab the day really had been when the sun popped out and brightened up the skies. For sure, I saw the day in a whole new light. (no pun, intended - honestly).

It was the funniest thing, for me, (and the cutest) to hear him "figuring" that out and then to hear him talk about what he noticed. He's growing up!!

I love this post. So very much.
Such a sweet eye opener for me, thank you Jenny. And thank you for the darling message you left me the other night. I am so excited to see you again soon...maybe after we get back from our upcoming trip to HI. And I am so embarassed about this but I still have your cassarole dish to get back to you.
God bless you with more sweet glimpses of beauty + joy during the rest of January.

Ahhh....
I really have to say, the dreary days are so relaxing. I don't feel the pressure to get as much done. Just curl up with a good book and some quiet toys for Ava...No one's dropping by!

Jenny,

I am going to go and "stack" our Candy Land cards just as soon as I can get my fingers on them! The first time we played that happened and she wasn't really happy and din't really want to play anymore! You advice as a sage parent is GREAT!!!

Now as for looking past the muck of the winter month of January... I think that what warms my heart the most really is the rooms that get played in so much in one day that you can hardly walk through them! I love it because it reminds me of how creative children are and how much living they can do in just a mater of seconds! Thanks for the reminder to stop and look inside the home instead of outside!!

:O)

January is a great "make a tent" month. Indoor adventures can be almost as fun as the outdoor ones.

This is a lovely reminder to look for the beauty this time of year. I was just commenting to my Mom the other day that outside everything is so ugly this time of year...especially without the snow. I will start to take note of the beauty around me!

Because the sun is so low in the sky and is not beating on my kitchen windows I get to leave the curtains open - wide open.

Great observatrions! I will now look around me in a different light. I don't like January, either. And my kids are so stir crazy lately from all the wet rainy days. I can't wait for warm summer weather again!
