sing over me
he is mighty to save.
He will take great delight in you,
he will quiet you with his love,
he will rejoice over you with singing."
-Zephaniah 3:17
My mom gave me this CD three years ago, right around the time my twin daughters were born. I loved its soft, gentle lullabies and worship songs.
There are no more babies to rock to sleep here in our home, but I still find myself listening to this album over and over again. It reminds me of a very special time in my life. Right after my girls were born, my husband was in a terrible accident at work, which ended his career as a firefighter. At times things seemed very dark, but as I sang these songs and rocked my girls, God, my Heavenly Father, was singing over me, calming my restless spirit as I tried to calm my restless babies.

spring break
Two weeks ago our family drove down to California (about a 16 hour drive) to visit family for Spring Break. We had a wonderful time visiting moms, dads, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. God is so good to fill our lives with people to love and people to love us! My kids were in heaven with doting grandmas and aunts. We savored the sunshine and the green grass, conversations over tea and coffee, and watching our kids run around barefoot. My husband and I were able to spend a night at a bed and breakfast in Mendocino. It was wonderful to see, smell and hear the ocean again!
We drove all night on the way down to California, but drove during the day on the way home. This was an interesting experience with 4 small children. We watched a few movies, read from Farmer Boy, and took naps. We were excited to stop at a Trader Joe's in Bend, OR (we don't have one anywhere near us) to stock up on a few of our favorite items. My kids thought it was a playground...they were literally bouncing off the walls. I decided not to stress out about it too much because it's very unlikely that I'll see any of those people again. I decided that if I got any strange looks from moms who would never let their kids act that way in a store, I would just smile politely and say, "they've been in a car for the past 8 hours," and push my little cart to the next aisle.
We arrived home early Friday morning. After unpacking and doing a bit of laundry, my husband and kids took me to the airport that night--about a month ago, my dear friend, Emily, planned an all expense-paid trip for me to visit her in Seattle! Hopefully I'll be able to sit down and write about my wonderful weekend soon.

...at a place near Your altar
"Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow builds her nest and raises her young at a place near your altar, O Lord of Heaven’s Armies, my King and my God!...What joy for those whose strength comes from the Lord."I read these verses today and thought to myself, "That's where I want to be, and that's where I want to lead my children. Better yet, that's where I want to raise them...at a place near Your altar, O Lord." It makes all the difference. I know I react differently to fussy children and chaos when I draw near to Him.
This little bird isn't just stopping by for a visit! She's building her nest there in order to do her work--to raise her young.
I'm going to ponder this and ask the Lord to show me what this should look like in my home.
Just what this tired mommy needed to read today!

Psalm 78

4 We will not hide these truths from our children;
we will tell the next generation
about the glorious deeds of the Lord,
about his power and his mighty wonders.
5 For he issued his laws to Jacob;
he gave his instructions to Israel.
He commanded our ancestors
to teach them to their children,
6 so the next generation might know them—
even the children not yet born—
and they in turn will teach their own children.
7 So each generation should set its hope anew on God,
not forgetting his glorious miracles

Time to Reflect and Refresh
I'm thankful to have a wonderful husband who takes such good care of me. He comes home from his long days at school and helps with dinner, laundry and bathing the kids. And if that wasn't enough, I'm able to spend Saturday mornings hidden away in a coffee shop reading, planning the week's activities and taking a little break from the busyness of home life. This morning I got a much-needed haircut, had coffee, did a little shopping, and went to the library. I love to browse the children's section with my kids, but today I was able to browse the adult section. I found a great art book, a soup cookbook, a couple of decorating books, and a book about vintage kitchen glassware.
This morning I revisited Honey for a Child's Heart. This book is a great resource for children's literature.
I love to pack my bookbag on Saturday mornings and head out the door for a good cup of coffee. Even better are the smiles and hugs I receive hours later when I return.

Not Again!

Don't get me wrong, she's kinda cute. My 6 year old son just informed me that her new look is "her cutest look!" And, after all, these dolls are made for kids--not for 34 year old nostalgic mommies. If you're a fan of Strawberry Shortcake, you can click here to find out more about these "relaunches."
So, which do you prefer? The 1980, the 2002 or the new 2009 version?

Afternoon Pick-Me-Up
When 3:00 arrives, nap time is over and my girls begin to stir. They're always so energized--but mommy? Not quite! Sometimes I don't think I'll make it to dinner time.To remedy this, I make myself an afternoon latte. It's become a necessity, in fact. Coffee is a beautiful thing. I couldn't resist taking this picture today. Hooray for coffee!

Valentine Mice
For someone who can't stand mice, I sure do a lot crafty things with them. These mice are made of folded paper hearts...simple! You can find the instructions to make these here. For the tails, I used rick rack instead of lollipops.2.09.2009

Touches of Pink and Red
I've always loved Valentine's Day. Isn't it such a wonderful day when you're in elementary school? What fun to pick out a box of Valentines at the store and then pretend not to enjoy passing them out to all the boys in your class! The first year I taught school, I had to pinch myself when I realized that I would be organizing my own Valentine parties. And how could I resist all the yummy chocolate delivered to my desk from at least 25 students? Oh, day of all days!Packing up Christmas is always difficult for me. It's so refreshing to add touches of pretty pink and bright red around the house after the gray and gloom of January.

Groundhog Day Fun
Happy Groundhog Day! My kids are always excited to wake up on February 2, because we make our predictions about Mr. Groundhog the night before.
Before breakfast, I get the computer all geared up so we can watch the news clip from Punxsutawney, PA. The kids are always so excited to see the "real" Mr. Groundhog. :)
Here's a little Groundhog Day snack for the littles. Hide a Hershey Kiss in a bowl of yogurt, topped with green sprinkles.1.31.2009

Mommy...What can I doooooooo?
My kids haven't been able to play outside since Thanksgiving because of a nasty storm that hit the Pacific Northwest. I've been trying to keep them busy indoors. Yesterday we ventured out and had doughnuts. It's amazing what a little trip like that can do. I think it was refreshing for all of us!I've been looking for things to do with the kids indoors. I've had my eye on these fun projects:
- Make a couple of Story Time Baskets
- Make Felt Play Food and Felt Valentine Cookies
- Prepare Storybook Muffin Tins for the littles to enjoy at lunchtime.

Just Keepin' It Real...
Blogging is an interesting thing. I've enjoyed using it to journal our family's life. My husband is going to make a hard copy one of these days so we can have it to cherish in book form. Won't that be fun?
I also enjoy "blog surfing" to peek into the lives of others and see what's going on in their homes. One of the things I've realized about blogging, is that people do it for different reasons. I find myself drawn to blogs that present life in a positive light. I feel the same way about visiting with my friends face-to-face. I much prefer visiting with friends who don't gripe and complain about their husbands and children, but encourage me spiritually. None of us are perfect or live in perfect homes, but getting together to chat about all the negative things going on in our lives does nothing to improve matters.
Another thing about blogging is that it's very easy to post what you want people to know about your life. I choose to write about the positive things that go on in my home. I realize it gives the impression that I have it all together as a mom. But the truth is, I don't! And that's not what I set out to do when I post here on my blog. When I look back on my years as mom, I want to remember the good times. I want to remember my kids doing craft projects with me, not the fact that almost everything I do with them backfires on me when they start arguing about paint colors, or who gets to sit on the stools, or who gets the pink sprinkles, etc. Just so you know my kids do fight. They argue all the time. They gripe, complain, hang onto me and whine, throw themselves on the floor and cry, and I do get upset. I also lack organizational skills, and the evidence around my home haunts me daily. I just don't want to focus on all of that here on my blog. Writing about it would only remind me of it later.
Last night I told my friend, Jenny, that I would post a few pictures here to confirm that I don't have it all together. :) So, without further adieu, here's the proof.
Enjoy...
Here's my sewing stuff. I know I'm really going to embarrass myself here. Not only do you see an unorganized mess, but there are 3-4 unfinished sewing projects stashed in that corner...
And here's the biggie. I saved the best for last...my bedroom closet and this morning's laundry. I was so tempted to straighten up the closet before taking this picture, but I restrained myself. As I took this picture, I asked myself,So, there you have it! It's kind of refreshing to post pictures of my closets. Now I feel motivated to do something about the mess!

Great Grandma's Vintage Floursack Towels
Awhile ago my mom sent me my Great Grandma's apron. I just received her vintage floursack towels in the mail from my little sister!

I Did It!
I know this seems like a terrible way to begin my want-to-have-dinner-guests venture (leftovers and corndogs!), but because it was totally unexpected, I didn't have time to stress about it all day. I see it as a great beginning. It was very simple, and my kids did great. Thank you all for your great advice!

Go Figure!
As I read to my kids tonight, I chuckled when I read of Laura Ingalls refusing to wear her corset to bed at night..."What your figure will be, goodness knows," Ma warned her. "When I was married, your Pa could span my waist with his two hands."
Is that even possible?
(I know some of you are trying this right now)

This encouraged my heart today...
God moves in a mysterious way
He plants His footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm.
Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take;
The clouds ye so much dread
Are big with mercy, and shall break
In blessings on your head.

A Reluctant Entertainer
We don't entertain often. I find it difficult to entertain dinner guests with young children. It's not that I don't enjoy having people over. I do! It's because dinnertime has always been a battle in our home. Breakfast and lunch don't seem to be a problem. Breakfast and lunch foods are, for the most part, kid-friendly. But oh, those yucky dinner foods! When we have family visit from out of town, I'm always reminded of how pleasant it can be to sit and linger and visit over a home-cooked meal. Grandmas, grandpas and aunts don't seem to mind an occasional squabble or tantrum, but what about friends and neighbors?
I love visiting 4 Reluctant Entertainers. This lady is amazing! She makes entertaining seem fun and extremely doable. I've heard people say this season will pass and I'll be able to entertain when my kids are a bit older. True...it would be easier, but sometimes I think my kids are missing out on the joys of sharing our home with others. Maybe I can set small goals for myself. I can have company over once a month, or invite a family with small children, or just make something kid-friendly for the kids and "yucky food" for the adults to avoid the infamous squabbles. Any thoughts on entertaining with young children?

The Nice Snow Plow Man

I don't know what else to title this post, because I'm very thankful for the nice man who drove the snow plow through this afternoon.
My husband, Phil, went back to school today. As most of you know, we've had more than our fair share of snow this year. I would gladly give any or all of it to those of you who envy us. While Phil was out, the snow plow came through and did our side of the street 3 times, creating an enormous 4 1/2 foot berm right in front of our driveway. Phil always goes out right after the plow comes through in order to shovel that hard and packed-down snow. If you wait too long, it's nearly impossible to move. So, I put on my boots and gloves and headed out the door to find the snow shovel. By this time all of my neighbors were outside trying to remove the snow from their driveways, as well, and many of them commented that I seemed to have more snow in my driveway than any of them...hmmm...imagine that.
I jabbed the snow shovel into the berm and the snow didn't budge. I wanted to cry, thinking that it would take me forever to move that snow, and I had 2 sick kids inside the house. I chiseled away at the pile for a few minutes and then prayed and asked God to do something...anything. I didn't want to leave it for Phil, because by the time he got home, the snow would have been worse.
Then the most amazing thing happened. The snow plow drove by, but on the other side of the street. He had gone the distance of about 2 houses before he stopped, backed up diagonally past my house, moved forward, and then pushed his blade through the berm in my driveway. I don't know if I looked pathetic out there or what! I do know how to shovel snow. Maybe he realized that I had an incredible amount to shovel. I'm not sure what he thought, but I thanked him and then thanked God for His provision. It still took me about an hour to shovel out what was left, but I'm thankful for his help, nonetheless.

Six
I never imagined this would be so difficult. My oldest turned six today. Six seems so old. He's officially out of the preschool stage, and that's all I've ever known as a mommy. I'm treading new waters here.Every time I looked at him today something inside me hurt, and I had to ask myself,
