Great Grandma's Apron

When I got home from the dentist this morning there was a package waiting for me on the porch. I was not at all prepared for what it contained. My mom sent me a copy of a book I've had my eye on, and my Great Grandma's apron. My Great Grandma was born before the turn of the century, and passed away when I was a little girl. I have very fond memories of her. My brother and I used to sit up to her kitchen counter on stools and sip root beer from straws. This is one of the reasons I wanted to add this counter to my kitchen.

My Grandpa (her son) passed away this summer, and my mom has been busy sorting through things left behind. She came across this apron in a hope chest. I feel so honored to receive this and to add it to my collection of aprons.

And, speaking of aprons, here's a picture of an apron I made the other night after the kids went to bed. I found two linen nap napkins on clearance last week and thought they would make an adorable apron. The plaid reminds me of candy corn.

So many things to say!

First, I love the vintage apron and the memories you have and what makes it special to you. Priceless! Also, I LOVE the apron you made - how gorgeous! You're so talented! And you made it in just one evening!?

How funny that your sister lives in Queen Anne. I work in Belltown - right up the street! :) It's a small world!

Oh how VERY special. It brought tears to my eyes and memories to my heart reading that.
My grandmother collected horses (not real ones, silly) and displayed them in her front room. She had one for each state and even more! What wonderful little treasures people have...
I agree with the other commenter, you are very talented! I love that waistband.
Today was my first day of Vintage Thingies and I have sooo enjoyed seeing others collections and finding new blogs. It's very nice to "meet" you and your aprons!

i want a tutorial on how to make this apron. it looks doable for even me.

i have a collection of aprons i received from mu husbands g-ma. they are adorable. you would be sad to know i have them stored away, as i cannot think of the perfect place to display them. i did use them a few years ago to decorate for my daughters cooking b-day party.

That is truly wonderful that you have the apron and the memories to go with it. I have some of my mother's aprons. They are very worn out... not even pretty anymore. But I remember them tied around her waist in the kitchen when I was just little. Very wonderful memories. Thanks for sharing yours.

That's a very pretty apron. My favorite VTT posts are the ones with personal stories. Your root beer story reminded me of making root beer floats with my own grandma. :) Thank you for sharing.

How kind of your mom to send the apron, but also the book! Great job on the autumnal napkin apron. I second the tutorial vote :)

I forgot to look at your dryer hose pumpkin today! I did however see this apron, and it is adorable. Couldn't you just find two winter, or Christmas napkins for the apron swap? I would be thrilled to get one like this.

Yikes! I'm not sure if I could offer a tutorial, because I'm not much of a seamstress.

The skirt of the apron is an already-hemmed napkin. That was the easy part. But I had to piece together the waistband and apron ties, because the second napkin (the plaid one) was about 15 inches long by 15 inches wide. I WISH 15 inches was enough to fit around my waist, but it's not. I cut strips from the plaid napkin and sewed them together to make a long band and then attached that to the skirt.

I used the extra plaid fabric to make a pocket, but rotated it 45 degrees to make the print diagonal. I also added rick rack to the top of the pocket.

I forgot to mention that I added two pleats to the napkin that I used for the skirt.
