Six

I never imagined this would be so difficult. My oldest turned six today. Six seems so old. He's officially out of the preschool stage, and that's all I've ever known as a mommy. I'm treading new waters here.

Every time I looked at him today something inside me hurt, and I had to ask myself,

"When did he grow up? He looks like such a big boy right now."

Somebody tell me this gets easier...

Thanks for your note today. That gives me a little bit of hope! I'm trying to be better at creating fun, crafty, educational moments, but most days I struggle just to get them to stop whining and fighting. I know it's just a season, and it will improve. Until then, I'll just keep trying hard!

BTW - happy b-day to your guy - I'm a couple of years away from that big bday!

Oh, I so feel your pain! I can't believe how big my kiddos are either! My oldest is only just a little older than yours, but I say it doesn't get any easier...sorry!
Blessings,
Joy

I understand that feeling. It really is a bit heartbreaking. Every time I feel that feeling I remind myself that with this next year many wonderful things are to come. Thank goodness I don't know what they are. It is all just a sweet surprise. Happy birthday to your big guy!!

Oh, I wish it did. :(
This is the year that my oldest starts Jr. High, and I don't even know what to think about that! I still have a few months left with all of my children in Elementary school or younger, but I know the year will pass quickly.

I'm coming over for that coffee! ;)

I have one who is nearly 18 and my method of dealing with this is by blurring my vision every time I look at her, so that what I see is the cute 6-year-old in ponytails and bangs, without the boyfriends, the car keys, the ACT tests, the college applications. Try it, it works.

I had the same little feeling on Saturday when my little daughter turned 2. All I could think about was the day she was born and how tiny she was in my arms. What a miracle motherhood is, and what a challenge!

It is nice to know that there are lots of Christian Mommy's out there!

i don't think it gets easier but...we just have to enjoy every moment and all the stages they are in because each stage has amazing wonders. time flies and children grow wings. two very hard truths. give lots of hugs and kisses to them everyday!

aw! Happy Birthday to your son!

I love the candle in that picture! Do you burn it down to the next number each year? ? ? That is just so neat!

My oldest son is turning 3 in March and I'm looking forward to it but with a bit of a heavy heart.

On a side note, do you own the candle in your picture. It seems like a cute tradition.

Thanks!!

Your asking your mom if it ever gets easier? I can't stand the fact that he is six and I'm missing all the new things he does :-(

Some of you wanted to know about the candle in the photo. It's called a birthday countdown candle. My sister-in-law gave one to each of my kids when they were born.

Happy birthday to your boy! I wish that I could offer you comfort, but I'm still in shock over my baby turning 2 :( I'm trying to cherish every day, but they are just zooming by!

Today I was putting away the ornaments from my tree. I had to fight back the tears as I put away all the ornaments with my kids pictures when they were little. Some of them are practically grown up already. I don't think it gets any easier...

I've recently found your beautiful blog. Just recently, my oldest asked me if I knew how old he was. I replied, "Yes, 12 1/2ish". He asked if I knew how old he was going to be on his birthday (being silly). I said, "Yes, and I don't want to talk about" as I giggled and turned to walk out of his room. I, too, relate to your sadness. It goes soooo fast.

I understand how you were feeling... My youngest turns three in just a few weeks and I am having a difficult time with it. It seems that the last remnants of "baby" are slipping away.

Our children's birthdays are bittersweet. Joy for who they are becoming, pain because it seems as though they are slipping away from us.

I had a birthday countdown candle when I was young! I would love to have one for my kids someday. Kelly

Just wait as they get older, it does get harder in some ways, and easier in others. They don't have so many intensive physical needs...the "work" gets to be more mental and emotional, I think. I'd be interested in what the other slightly ( smiling ) older moms would say. I definitely look back and wish I had cherished those days even more than I did. You've got to read "Let Me Hold You Longer" by Karen Kingsbury. She says it so well.

BTW, I love the candle. Have never seen a birthday one, but I grew up with a countdown candle for every new year. I always look for one in the holiday "stuff", but have never found one.

Thanks for doing such a great blog!

Susan
